You’ve booked the flights, you’ve bought the new travel wardrobe and now you are thinking, what bag am I going to bring?! Here is our foolproof guide to picking the right case for your trip.

The OG Backpack

When you think of backpacking, you automatically imagine the large ass backpack strapped around your hips and shoulders (essentially a mini you on your back). As far as actual backpacking goes, these types of bags are probably the best, but they aren’t all made the same! These types of bags are best for your longer trips where you will be island hopping and hiking with a more full-on itinerary.

Osprey Ariel Plus 70

  • 68L backpack with hip and shoulder straps

  • Raincover included

  • Front flap access and multiple zip compartments

  • RRP: 350 GBP | 670 AUD

Mountain Warehouse Inca Extreme 80L Rucksack

  • 80L Ruckack with hip and shoulder straps

  • Rainstop fabric and comes with rain cover

  • Adjustable back system and airflow system

  • RRP: 170 GBP | 270 AUD

The Backpack 2.0

Kind of the Hannah Montana of backpacks, you get the best of both worlds! These types of backpacks have both strap and wheel features, meaning you can swap between the two as you please. This is the style of backpack we all used while travelling and honestly, it was a lifesaver! We have given two options, one being with proper backpacking straps which can be concealed and a duffel-style bag that has straps you could use for short spaces of time like jumping off a boat into shin-high water to get to an island! These types of bags are perfect if your trip is in between backpacking and leisure (as we said, best of both) ;)

Osprey Farpoint® Wheeled Travel Pack

  • 65 L, which we found perfect for backpacking for around 9 months

  • Has comfortable and adjustable hip/ shoulder straps and wheels so you can choose how to transport it.

  • RRP: 270 GBP

Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler XT 29" Wheeled Duffel

  • 90 L, way more than what we needed but would be perfect if you have a lot of baggage (physically not emotionally)

  • Three carry options: Side Carry, Luggage Handle, Backpack with zip-away backpack straps

  • RRP: 260 GBP | 520 AUD

The Reliable Suitcase

We know them, we love them, you probably have at least 3 in your attic at your parents’ house. The trusty suitcase is just as much of a contender to bring travelling as a backpack, maybe slightly less practical on the odd occasion, but still fully doable. The amount of time we used our straps was minimal compared to rolling our bags, so don’t listen to the stereotype that a real traveller can’t bring a suitcase.

July Checked

  • 80 L, would be perfect for those who have a bit more to bring but want to travel in style

  • Lifetime warranty, 100 day returns (on July website)

  • RRP: 275 GBP | 375 AUD
